Abstract

Few people have made a larger contribution to the ongoing life and health of Churches of Christ around the world than Charles Siburt. During his twenty-four years at Abilene Christian University, Siburt oversaw some fifty DMin theses- a capstone experience designed to recount best practices in congregational life. Rooted in Dr. Siburt's conviction that good theology makes a difference in the lives of people, The Effective Practice of Ministry is a collection of thirteen of those research projects, covering the most critical topics facing churches today: spiritual formation, leadership development, catechesis, preaching, and missional initiatives in the larger community. In honor of Dr. Siburt, this anthology is meant to inspire and encourage effective, embodied praxis in the ministry of the church.

Abstract

"What motivates "ordinary people" to support refugees emotionally and financially? This is a timely question considering the number of displaced people in today's world is at an all-time high. To help counter this crisis, it is imperative for the Canadian government to determine which policies encourage volunteers to welcome asylum seekers, and which ones must be reviewed. Ordinary People, Extraordinary Actions relates the story of the St. Joseph's Parish Refugee Outreach Committee over its thirty years in action, revealing how seemingly small decisions and actions have led to significant changes in policies and in people's lives--and how they can do so again in the future. By helping readers--young and old, secular and faith-oriented--understand what drives individuals and communities to welcome refugees with open hearts and open arms, the authors hope to inspire people across Canada and beyond its borders to strengthen our collective willingness and ability to offer refuge as a lifesaving protection for those who need it."-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"The aim of this collected work is to focus on family and youth ministry in the field of ecclesial missiology. Its scholarly contribution is to address the sometimes unintended and unnoticed influence of globalisation on the mission of the church against the background of the International Association for Mission Studies study group for children, youth and families. This interdisciplinary scholarly book employs insights from the social sciences, anthropology, psychology and theology. From a primarily auto-ethnographical and empirical perspective, the book describes the powers, inequalities and vulnerabilities of children, youth and families in a globalised world from diverse contexts."--Back cover.

Abstract

A compelling memoir by an urban minister and community development practitioner with more than thirty years of experience in the field. Larry James appeared to be exactly where he was supposed to be-ministering with a large, suburban Dallas church. Then came the intriguing invitation to move his ministry to inner city Dallas among some of the "poorest" people in the community. Encouraged by his wife, Brenda, to follow the truth he had so often shared as a pastor, Larry accepted. As the new director of a food pantry, Larry was quickly overwhelmed, and one day when trying to communicate with Spanish-speaking families, he asked a woman named Josefina to help translate. She had come for assistance, but Josefina ended uphelping Larry that day, and the next. She came back the next day for nine years. Since that day Josefina began helping two decades ago, Larry has been asking neighbors to help solve their own problems, and this new way of serving side by side has transformed a small food pantry into one of the largest non-profit food distributors in the world. With a budget of fourteen million dollars annually, the organization-now called CitySquare-also develops housing for the formerly homeless and manages health clinics and community medical outreach in economically depressedand under-served places like East and South Dallas. This is an organizational success story you expect to see in the Wall Street Journal, and yet it is like no other. The author's own journey provides the platform from which he provides a practical, theological, market-savvy manual written for others who find themselves living, serving, and investing in the work of urban transformation. Using the foundation of Jesus' teaching and love for the poor, the book shows practical and visionary ways Christ's teaching can be made real.
